USAF's new KC-45A Air-to-Air (AAR) aircraft contract awarded

01 March, 2008
The new AAR, the KC-45A, aircraft contract goes to the Northrop-Grumman/EADS group who will build the aircraft based on the successful Airbus A330 freighter.
It's good news for BAe Systems who get to build the wings and for the staff at the factories at Broughton and Filton who jobs are secured. 145 aircraft worth £20 billion could be built if the four test aircraft are deemed a success. Although many of the aircraft's component parts will be built in Europe, the final assembly will take place in Mobile, USA. It would be further good news if the USAF had chosen Rolls-Royce for the engines but they selected General-Electric engines to be built in Ohio and North Carolina instead.

It just remains to be seen if Boeing appeals against the award of the contract as they have much support in the USA for a completely American built aircraft.
