UK Government vision for defence sector growth

09 September, 2013
Prime Minister to set out public private partnership scheme to boost British defence industry growth through competitive advantage

Developed by the Defence Growth Partnership forum (DGP), the document being launched today by the UK's Prime Minister, David Cameron is called Securing Prosperity and sets out the strategy for making the best use of the defence sector's core strengths and how industry and the government can cooperate to turn this into competitive advantage for growing the sector on international markets.

The key areas that the DGP focused on as being the main strengths that can be taken advantage of include:

* The strong air defence capabilities which have demonstrated over 80% export success during the last decade

* High levels of capability in the intelligent systems industry which is increasingly at the core of military systems

* The development of skills across a wide range of professions particularly in engineering

* The competitiveness of the country's defence value chain

The Government sees the country's defence industry not only as a key supplier to its own and allied armed forces, but also as one of the main sectors of the country's economy with enormous opportunities for industry, employment and skills development at all levels of the supply chain.

As such, part of the Government's commitment is to establish the right conditions for the industry to thrive. To this end, the DGP is launching the strategic vision at the Department for Business Innovation and Skills today.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Britain’s defence industry is a national success story that we are right to take pride in. Across the country, British engineers, scientists, apprentices and manufacturers are working to ensure that our armed forces have the best equipment in the world.

“But as well as making an essential contribution to our national security, the industry is vital to economic growth too – with well over 100,000 people employed and a turnover of £22 billion a year.

“The Defence Growth Partnership sets us and industry a joint challenge to deliver a long-term strategic vision to maintain our position on the leader board – maximising opportunities for British business and further strengthening the economy.”

Adding to the Prime Minister's comments, the Co-Chairman of the DGP, Steve Wadey said: “The work of the Defence Growth Partnership to date has brought the importance of the sector to the fore, highlighting the UK’s core areas of strength which offer the greatest opportunity for growth, both at home and overseas. The defence industry welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with government, enabling us to develop technologies, skills and capabilities that meet the needs of customers today and for the long-term, ultimately driving growth in the UK economy.”

Business Minister Michael Fallon and Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne will be attending the DSEI 2013 (Defence Systems and Equipment International) exhibition at the Excel venue in London to discuss the new Strategic Vision.
