Can Osama bin Laden strike in the USA again

08 September, 2008
With another 9/11 Anniversary imminent, the question again arises as to whether a fresh al-Qaeda attack is likely inside the USA ?

Expert testimony at a recent hearing of the Intelligence, Information Sharing and Terrorism Risk Assessment Subcommittee of the House Committee on Homeland Security was a mix of good news and bad.

Al-Qaeda is apparently facing falling popularity in the Muslim world and an increasing challenge to its violent Jihadist philosophy from both more moderate religious authorities and reformed former radicals. Its actual numbers are small, and the core group seems much diminished.

Nevertheless, it is suggested that al-Qaeda would like to pull off major attacks in the USA, Israel and Europe in order to silence its critics. Weapons of choice may be rocket-propelled grenades against commercial airliners or radiological, 'dirty' bombs against a city.

Accordingly, we really need to keep our defenses high and take all the precautions that our elected government leaders may suggest. Encouragingly, the quality of their intelligence sources is now claimed to be the "best ever’: therefore as tax-paying citizens we ought to be able to sleep peacefully in our beds at night.
