TSS (International) Ltd supplies new steering control for Type-23 Frigates.
HMS Portland recently became the first Royal Navy Type-23 frigate to be fitted with a steering control system by TSS (International) Ltd. The system provides the ship with hand and autopilot steering controls linked to its steering pump mechanism. It has been manufactured following a two-year development programme in which TSS International designers worked closely with the prime contractor; Rolls-Royce Motion Control Brown Brother Naval Systems.

All of the equipment supplied for the Type 23 frigate is of a new design, but the system architecture is based upon the well-proven designs used by TSS on other military platforms. The new steering control system has been installed as a retrofit and includes a range of features developed to ensure optimum safety and reliability. These include dual-channel, follow-up hand control from the bridge and steering gear compartment helm positions. Emergency steering control is available by manual override and operation of the manual/hydraulic servo valve. A comprehensive monitoring system with alarm circuits also ensures that the steering will always 'fail safe' and allow timely rectification of any faults. New rudder servo amplifiers and feedback units were also developed and the project also included a part replacement of the steering engine for which TSS engineers collaborated with Rolls Royce Marine Products. Close cooperation with the Royal Navy throughout the system's evolution has resulted in a design that anticipates all situations that might be encountered during combat and peacetime operations.

The Type-23 steering control system is supplied by TSS under its S G Brown brand name and is manufactured at its facility in Watford, UK. The company specialises in skilled bespoke engineering capable of adapting new technology to existing systems, or in the repair and maintenance of complex marine equipment. S G Brown has manufactured over seventy steering control systems for ships in the Royal Navy and for those of other nations including Australia, Netherlands and Brazil.

S G Brown is widely known as a manufacturer of gyrocompasses and its steering control systems have been developed for ships that range in size from the Hunt Class minesweepers to the Invincible Class aircraft carriers.
