UK Trade and Investment is urging smaller businesses to increase exports and is offering grants to companies for them to attend trade shows overseas with a particular emphasis on the Marine industry
With latest figures showing the longest uninterrupted rise in exports in goods since 1995, Lord Davies is urging UK firms to make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape for a run of export success.

Figures released this month by the Office of National Statistics showed that UK exports in goods had risen by 6.1% over the three months to end-October.

Lord Davies, Minister for Trade, Investment and Small Business, said: “In the year since I became a Minister, I have met hundreds of innovative businesses, many of them SMEs, whose fortunes were transformed by going global. It is good business sense not to tie your firm’s future to one market alone.

“UK firms should make a New Year’s resolution to find out about the real help on offer via UK Trade & Investment. Make 2010 the year when you take it to the world.”

In the last 12 months, UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) has helped almost 24,000 firms to generate £3.6 billion in additional revenue.

It has advisers in all English regions and cooperates with the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Local experts can help businesses to identify which markets are most suitable for them. They then link into a network of trade experts in almost 100 markets that can do the research and find appropriate contacts for businesses to meet.

Helping to get firms to market, UKTI offers grants under its Tradeshow Access Programme (TAP) of up to £1,800 for businesses to take part in hundreds of tradeshows overseas.

A new list was unveiled this month and includes shows such as CeBIT in Germany for technology firms, MIPCOM and MIPTV for creative industries in France, and Medica for life sciences in Germany.

The Director of the Tradeshow Access Programme Ron Archibald said: “We are on course for the best year for the TAP programme, supporting more businesses than ever before. Given the value of the pound, it’s a good time to export and we are helping firms to get directly to their customers. Companies you see at tradeshows these days are serious about doing business.”
