Farnborough International Limited
: 26 April, 2008  (Company News)
Farnborough International Limited (FIL), organiser of the world’s most famous airshow, has appointed Shaun Ormrod as its new Chief Executive.
For the first time, the Farnborough International Board has looked outside the aerospace sector for its Chief Executive and has recruited Shaun Ormrod from the events industry, a move which reflects the increasing diversification of the Farnborough site and the desire to position the airshow as the principal asset in a larger international events and venue portfolio.

Chairman of Farnborough International, Simon Frost stated: “Shaun will be assuming full Chief Executive responsibility after this year’s airshow in July when he takes over the lead from Trevor Sidebottom our Managing Director who retires in November after guiding FIL through its formative years with considerable skill and excellent judgement.”

Mr Ormrod’s career has been spent in the events industry, and it is his experience of site development and customer service which is expected to be a real strength for the Farnborough International Airshow. He has made his career primarily in venue management, starting in sales before progressing into general management. He brings experience of managing all aspects of major UK events venues from site development, through sales to operational and commercial aspects of site management. Additionally, he has been responsible for major capital development, commercial turn-around and liaison with key stakeholders, including government agencies at national and local level; regional development agencies and major infrastructure providers.

Shaun Ormrod’s most recent position was as General Manager at the Alexandra Palace. Prior to that, he had been Group Operations Director with the NEC Group, where he implemented a robust group-wide customer care process, and twenty year transport strategy, as well as overseeing phase one of a £40million refurbishment programme. Previously, he had spent six years as Managing Director of The International Centre, during which time he won Investors in People status and The Events Best Venue UK Award (in 2004) for the venue.

Speaking of his appointment, Mr Ormrod commented: “Farnborough International Limited is renowned throughout the world for the airshow, and it is an honour for me to be associated with the largest temporary exhibition on the planet and a brand that is a British national treasure. It is exciting for me to be joining FIL at this juncture, given this summer’s celebrations of 60 years of the show at Farnborough and the centenary of the first ever powered sustained flight from this airfield in 1908. As we prepare to commemorate a century of innovation on this site, we are of course planning for the next 100 years, and in this context, I am very positive about the opportunities for development to maximise the potential of this show site. I bring with me a keen commitment to delivering high levels of customer service and exceeding client expectation. I will be talking to airshow exhibitors to find out what is important to them in delivering customer service to their clients and customers, and I will use the information to further develop the long term strategy for Farnborough International Airshow. ”

Simon Frost added : “The appointment of an events professional as our Chief Executive has been a deliberate strategy by the FIL board. Shaun brings in-depth knowledge and experience of the venues market together with proven management expertise. He has worked in a variety of events industry roles and is keen to bring this experience to the aerospace industry. The FIL board was impressed by Shaun’s vision to develop the Farnborough site as a major, diversified events venue, with the airshow remaining as our premier event. Following significant investment in the infrastructure of the Farnborough site and the construction of our excellent new FIVE building over the past 12 months, we will be looking to Shaun to continue its development and unlock its infinite potential.”
