Ecophon - High Performance Acoustic Ceiling

Ecophon : 22 June, 2007  (Application Story)
A brand new one-and-half form entry primary school on an existing site in Middleton St George, Darlington has been completed with the interior spaces featuring a variety of ceiling installations where the designers have sought to optimise the visual as well as physical attributes of the high performance ceiling systems, often specified to address issues of acoustic control and whole life costing.
St George's Church of England School, Darlington has been built by Dorin Construction from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with Silvester Ashton Partnership the lead design consultant. Decke Limited from Tyne and Wear, was the EPIC (Ecophon Partnership in Contracting) approved installer of the Ecophon systems, implementing the designs in the role of specialist sub-contractor.

Ecophon's Gedina tile has been employed in combination with the Etage system to create three-dimensional soffits within the classrooms, avoiding the situation of down-stands obstructing the passage of light, or impacting on the outward appearance of the room interiors.

Focus and Focus Wing products have been utilised to create a large curved floating ceiling within St George's main hall and meeting room.

The Administrator leading the project for Silvester Ashton Partnership, Mr Dominic Marshall, explains: 'For the classrooms we employed Gedina to create a raked ceiling: a flat line over half of the classroom and then rising up towards the clerestory glazing at the back of the classroom. 'This maintains the maximum amount of natural daylight and provides cross ventilation while still achieving a good level of acoustic control. He continues, 'We chose Ecophon because we have used the manufacturer's products quite regularly in the past and have been pleased with the performance.'
