DVD - Defence Equipment And Support (DE&S)
: 15 May, 2009  (Company News)
The Royal Engineers’ new deployable workshop will be showcased at DVD 2009, Defence Equipment & Support’s (DE&S) key stakeholder event, taking place on 24th and 25th June, at Millbrook.
The Deployable Engineer Workshop (DEW) has been developed as part of a £6.7 million investment by the MoD. This provides the Sappers with a purpose built working environment equipped to maintain the operational equipment and infrastructure of front line forces wherever they are posted.

The DEW covers an area equivalent to half a football-pitch when erected and can be up and running within 24 hours. It provides a well-equipped, working environment which enables carpenters and joiners, welders, metal smiths, electricians, plumbers, heating, ventilation and air conditioning fitters, and painters and finishers to produce items in support of operations. These can range from door and window frames to signs and fencing, as well as repairs to existing infrastructure items. DEW also contains the office facilities to support the design and management requirements of a busy workshop.

DEW provides a safe and modern environment for Army tradesmen to operate. Before the development of the DEW, conditions in the field could be less than ideal, utilising makeshift shelters or buildings that were not always well suited to the task

DVD 2009 provides the unique platform to showcase the DEW to key members of the defence sector and attending service personnel. Members of the Deployable Support and Test Equipment Team will be present throughout the two day event to demonstrate and discuss the new equipment with the wider industry and attending members of the military.

This new capability has already been well received by the Royal Engineers’ tradesmen and Field Support Squadrons who will use it. Manufactured by G3 Systems Ltd of Portland, Dorset, the first of four systems has already been incorporated into a busy exercise programme. When the Royal Engineer specialists have been able to put it through its paces and become familiar with the new workshop.

Peter Gleave of G3 Systems said: “Everyone at G3 is very proud to have worked with the Battle Field Utilities team to deliver capability to the UK’s Armed Forces. We are confident the DEW will provide the Royal Engineers with a flexible, safe and effective facility to perform their vital task”.
