Lightweight composite material for use in armour provides multi-hit protection against IED and small or medium calibre weapons

Morgan Advanced Materials’ Composites and Defence Systems (Morgan) highlights its CAMAC advanced composite technology, designed to deliver outstanding performance in ballistic and improvised explosive device (IED) protection. Armour systems made from CAMAC materials are custom-designed to deliver the optimum balance of performance, weight, and cost.

CAMAC Armour provides a protective shield with outstanding ballistic and mechanical performance, and is up to 50 percent lighter than the equivalent steel Armour for protection from Armour-piercing rounds. CAMAC systems can defeat a wide range of threats, including fragmentation, high velocity small arms, grenade attack, mine blasts, and burning fluids. Composite panels are precision-molded to match individual vehicle configurations.

Utilising fibres such as, S-2 Glass, E Glass, aramid and polyethylene, Morgan consolidates ballistic laminates by employing a wide range of molding techniques. Morgan’s unrivalled knowledge and experience of processing, allows for precise dimensional control and consistency. The laminates can also be combined with ceramic and metal hybrids to optimise them for specific design and performance requirements.

Several CAMAC formulations are available for multiple applications. CAMAC appliqué Armour provides lightweight, multi-hit protection for existing platforms against a wide range of threats, including small or medium calibre weapons, IEDs and rocket propelled grenades. CAMAC spall Armour improves crew and platform survivability through the mitigation of behind Armour effects.

Also available is CAMAC structural Armour, made from unique composite materials and resin formulations. Specially used in the manufacture of light Armoured vehicles and in aviation and maritime applications, CAMAC ultra-light semi-structural Armour provides effective multi-hit protection for vehicle-mounted weapon stations. Its lightweight construction reduces gross platform weight, adverse centre of gravity effects, and electromagnetic compatibility issues.
