General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy to modernize San Diego-homeported LSD 41 and LSD 49-class amphibious assault ships. The total potential value of the contract if all options are exercised is approximately $210 million for work to be performed through 2014.

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, a $20.7 million contract to provide ongoing Lead Yard Services for the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class AEGIS destroyer program. This option-year exercise modifies a contract initially awarded in November, 2005 and extends the period of performance through June 30, 2009.

Curtiss-Wright Awarded Multi-Million Dollar Contract for Italian Frigate Program

Curtiss-Wright Corporation has received a multi-million dollar contract from Fincantieri S.p.A for the supply of TC-ASIST helicopter handling systems for the first two ships of the FREMM frigate program. The contract also contains options for the remaining eight ships planned in the class for the Italian Navy.
 
World's First for NATO Submarine System

The new NATO Submarine Rescue System (NSRS) has been taking part in the NATO Exercise Bold Monarch 08, alongside Russian and US rescue systems. During the exercise submarines from Norway, The Netherlands and Poland will be bottomed in a simulated sinking and rescue systems then ′mate’ with the submarine to rescue the survivors.

A patent application has been granted for the taper locking key design of Orkot® Marine Bearings’, part of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions in Rotherham, stern tube bearings manufactured in two material grades for commercial and naval vessels. The expanding key is a mechanical fixing option to bearing assembly by press fitting or chocking. This design allows for removal of the bearings without dry-docking the vessel.
