The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) announced today that its annual convention and exhibition, AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2007, will be the largest in the Association's 35 year history. With 230,000 gross square feet (over 70,000 square meters) of exhibit space and more than 275 international exhibitors, this show is the largest of its kind and the only event that brings together all unmanned disciplines including air, ground, and maritime, for the most extensive display of robotic and unmanned systems hardware in the world.

A system which provides a single pilot with the ability to fly their own aircraft while simultaneously directing up to four further unmanned aircraft has been successfully demonstrated from the cockpit of a military fast jet for the first time. The system, developed by QinetiQ and funded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), gives unmanned aircraft an advanced level of independence and intelligence, or autonomy. A series of successful flight trials were flown using a Tornado as the command and control aircraft and a BAC 1-11 trials aircraft acting as a 'surrogate' unmanned air vehicle (UAV). The Tornado pilot also had responsibility for commanding a further three simulated UAVs.

Eurocopter - Contract With French Gendarmerie For 37 EC135

Eurocopter signed a significant contract with the French Gendarmerie for the acquisition of 37 EC135 (12 firm orders and 25 options) valued at €233 million. These EC135, which will be used for police missions, will replace the single-engine Ecureuil B, BA and B1 that the French Gendarmerie has been operating since 1980. The first helicopters will be delivered during the last quarter of 2008.

Octec Image Processing – part of Radstone Embedded Computing – has announced that its optical tracker solution had been selected by Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) to be part of the Autonomous Airborne Refueling Demonstration (AARD) System that performed the first ever autonomous probe and drogue airborne refueling engagement on August 30th at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Utilizing a NASA F/A-18B and an Omega Air Refueling Services 707 tanker, the NASA Dryden flight test crew flew the F/A-18B to the designated pre-engagement position, activated the AARD system, and then 'rode along' hands-off through a series of refueling engagements.

Eurocopter, through the company Heli Invest, its Warsaw-based representative in Poland, has recently signed two contracts - for the first EC135 and the first EC145 in Poland respectively. Both contracts were finalised with two important corporate customers in Poland. Due for delivery early next year, these two sales mark the entry of the company's advanced light twins in the Polish market, adding to the fleet of EC120 B and EC130 B4 helicopters (presently seven machines in total) already sold and operational in Poland. The fact that Heli Invest is also Eurocopter's certified maintenance and service centre in Poland encouraged the customers' decisions to opt for these two top-selling twin-engine helicopters.

Today, the 500th EC135 helicopter built at Eurocopter's German production facility in Donauwörth was delivered to the Austrian Motorist and Touring Club (÷AMTC). General Manager of Eurocopter's German sites, Dr. Wolfgang Schoder, handed over the aircraft to Mr. Kurt Noé-Nordberg, CEO of ÷AMTC Air Ambulance Services. This is the 25th EC135 for ÷AMTC, one of the largest private operators of this helicopter type in the world
QinetiQ ?52.5M Contract To Support Typhoon Programme
