Thales UK / QinetiQ - Secure Communications Interoperability
Communication Equipment, Infrastructure, Services : 24 November, 2006
Thales UK and QinetiQ have signed an agreement to co-develop products, services and solutions based on the Secure Communications Interoperability Protocol (SCIP). Targeted at providing ′best of breed' telephony solutions to the growing UK and export markets for secure telephony, both companies will use their sovereign UK High Grade and related Information Assurance capabilities to create a UK-based centre of excellence. Initial offerings will include fixed telephony solutions based on both PSTN and VoIP and interoperable mobile solutions. SCIP has been selected by the UK Government as its future secure telephony standard and is currently under consideration by at least 29 nations worldwide for defence and public safety environments. The standard is designed for both wide and narrowband voice and data security providing media independent solutions at a time of rapid change in the telephone communications industry. Key components to the SCIP standard include: key management, voice compression, encryption and a signalling plan.

BBN Technologies, announced it has been awarded $2.5 million in additional funding under the second phase of DARPA's Advanced Speech Encoding (ASE 2) program to develop a noise-robust, ultra-low data rate vocoder for more efficient and effective radio communications. Vocoders compress the bandwidth needed for voice communication. ASE 2 vocoding technology is a key enabler of reliable communications anywhere, anytime among troops across all military branches. For instance, the technology would allow Army tank operators to talk to Marine helicopter crewmembers using cell-phone-like technology.

Thales UK - ?50M Contract for Falcon Transmission Subsystem
Communication Equipment, Infrastructure, Services : 30 September, 2006
Thales UK has received a contract from BAE Systems worth in excess of £50M to supply the Transmission Subsystem and Security Subsystem for the FALCON Programme. Thales UK is a key partner in the BAE Systems FALCON team, which has been awarded a contract to supply the first increment of the FALCON information infrastructure programme. FALCON will support the Army's command systems by providing a new high capacity, secure information system infrastructure capability at the operational and tactical levels of command that can be deployed rapidly by air into any theatre of operations. The system has greatly improved data throughput, multi-level security, mobility and manpower efficiencies compared with current systems. The Bowman tactical system and Cormorant command system will feed information into FALCON, which will be able to link back to UK headquarters using the Skynet 5 satellite communications system. In line with the Defence Industrial Strategy, FALCON is key to the 'Resilient Information Infrastructure' of Network Enabled Capability (NEC) by providing the modern, secure communications infrastructure required by deployed formations and operating bases.
