Vulnerable nuclear material removed from Czech Republic

11 April, 2013
Non proliferation milestone reached with removal of highly enriched uranium from Czech city

In a joint operation conducted by the USA and the Russian Federation, almost 70 kilogrammes of highly enriched uranium has been removed from the Czech Republic's Nuclear Research Institute in the city of Rez. The amount removed was enough to have created two nuclear weapons.

Fourteen cuntries have now been cleared of such material since the project began in 2009 with the involvement of Russia to make all vulnerable nuclear material secure.

Between the USA and Russia, over 1200kg of highly enriched weapons grade uranium and plutonium have been secured and further successes are expected before the end of 2013. Such work is regarded as highly important in reducing the threat of terrorist groups laying their hands on nuclear materials.

The uranium from the Czech Republic and other participating countries has been shipped to Russia for downgrading to low enriched uranium for use in power station reactors. After processing in this way, the material is no longer suitable for use in weapons.
