Exercising the Right of Protest at Airports

10 December, 2008
One of the cornerstones of democracy is the right to protest peacefully. We honour the great dissidents of the past and present such as Martin Luther King in the USA, Nelson Mandela in South Africa and Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma.
However, the recent occupation of airports, whether in Thailand, the UK or elsewhere, is infringing the civil and legal rights of travellers to travel. What is more, criminal gangs not to mention terrorist groups such as Jihadists, ETA or Chechen militants can infiltrate any demonstration and exploit the security breaches it creates.

In the 21st Century there are surely more than enough media avenues open to protesters without creating horrendous difficulties for marooned business travellers and holidaymakers, innocent victims caught up in a clash with authority.

Maybe placard-waving itself is now outdated and should be consigned to 1960’s and 1970’s history books. After all, Europe’s most vociferous, revolutionary student leaders of 1968 have now recanted, men such as Daniel Cohn-Bendit, "Danny the Red’, who is now a most respectable European Parliamentarian for the Greens!
