Devising Winning Battle Strategies On The Computer Screen

01 August, 2008
More credit should be given to our ever more sophisticated and challenging computer war games. In the 21st century they are not just for training the individual in decision-making and reaction speed, but also for optimising campaign strategy and timing and co-ordinating military actions.

To a considerable extent, computer technology is already removing the power of choice from the commander in the field and luck from the equation. The general, admiral or air vice-marshal can only choose the optimum solution based upon the known parameters of the situation facing him. And the effectiveness of electronic systems is making those parameters ever more accurate and reliable. The thought that the best military strategists around today may be young computer gamers would surely have such formidable adversaries as Napoleon and Wellington, Scheer and Jellicoe, Yamamoto and Nimitz, or Rommel and Montgomery, turning in their graves. Yet that may easily be the case. And no one can deny that advanced computing technology is already a key element in any modern warfare.
