: 12 September, 2007  (New Product)
Thales UK and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace of Norway today announce the signing of a teaming agreement. This agreement enables Thales to address the UK remote weapons station (RWS) market through the licensed manufacture by Thales in Glasgow of the Kongsberg ′PROTECTOR' RWS. It will provide Thales' customer base in UK with a proven product line and through-life support from within the UK.
The complementary technology and skills within the Thales and Kongsberg team will offer integrated solutions with the necessary modularity and flexibility to address all the key UK opportunities. In particular the team will be focusing on the UK armoured fighting vehicle programmes that require RWS solutions capable of being integrated into existing or proposed electronic architectures.

Thales and Kongsberg are pursuing other potential extensions of the agreement, which is hoped will materialise in due course.

The PROTECTOR RWS is a remotely controlled weapon station for light- and medium-calibre weapons and can be installed on any type of vehicle. More than 2,000 PROTECTOR RWS systems have been delivered to several customers around the world, including successful deployment by Kongsberg into the US Army Stryker vehicle programme.

Recently Kongsberg was awarded a US$1 bn framework contract for deliveries of RWS to the CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station) programme in the US.

Alex Cresswell, Managing Director of Thales Land and Joint Systems UK says: 'The agreement builds on Thales' long history of developing, manufacturing and supporting vehicle sighting systems such as Challenger 2, CVRT, Warrior IFV, Stormer and BGTI. It consolidates the position of Thales as the leading company in UK for providing sensors, sights and integrated situational awareness systems for the UK's Armoured Fighting Vehicles.'

Egil Haugsdal, Executive Vice President of Kongsberg says: 'With the PROTECTOR RWS, Kongsberg has developed mature, proven, competitive technology. The agreement will enable Thales to provide its UK customers with a truly world-class product in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market.'
