Thales UK has been awarded a contract to supply its thermal driver sights (TDS) and Thales land navigation systems (TLNS) to FNSS of Turkey for a Middle East customer. Following an intense international competition, the order, for up to 300 driver sights and 27 navigation systems, is part of FNSS’ first phase of upgrades to these M113 vehicles.
With equipment sourced from across Thales’ operating countries, Thales UK has provided a single-source solution to FNSS for these vehicles.

The TDS is a compact, un-cooled thermal sight designed for tactical and armoured combat vehicles, which have moderate-to-high space and weight limitations, but still require an enhanced degree of situational awareness during closed-hatch and high-risk operations. Manufactured by Thales in Canada, it is a proven solution, currently in service with the British Army.

The TLNS addresses the requirements for a highly accurate navigation system for armoured fighting vehicles. It includes a Commanders Display Panel and features a powerful navigation processor with associated peripherals and interfaces to achieve a robust navigation solution suitable for the harshest of environments. Designed to permit the manual input of position, heading and laser range data, the system is engineered to allow automatic operation with the minimum of user intervention. The TLNS will be manufactured by Thales UK’s optronics facility in Glasgow.

Thales UK has now delivered over 600 integrated vehicle systems incorporating the TLNS to the UK Ministry of Defence under the Battlefield Group Thermal Imager (BGTI) contract. BGTI is installed on the Warrior and Scimitar (Reconnaissance) armoured vehicles and the contract includes long-term in-service support.

Alex Cresswell, Managing Director of Thales UK’s land and joint systems business, says: “Our excellent relationship with FNSS, coupled with proven, high-performance technology such as the TDS sights and TLN Systems, is testimony to our ability to provide high quality systems from across the world, suitable for any operational requirement, and integrated into a cohesive solution by Thales in the UK'
