TAM signs contract for the acquisition of 37 additional Airbus aircraft

Brazil's largest airline, TAM has signed a firm contract with Airbus for the acquisition of 37 additional Airbus aircraft and 12 options (12 A319s, 16 A320s, three A321s and six A330s). With this new order TAM's fleet, directly acquired from Airbus, will reach 115 aircraft.

Since 1998, TAM has consistently increased its Airbus fleet to match the growth in demand in the Brazilian domestic market and to expand on its international network. TAM is the largest Airbus operator in Latin America, and currently operates a fleet of 72 Airbus aircraft (including 14 A319s, 48 A320s and ten A330-200s).

TAM is also the launch customer in Latin America of the A350 for which it has placed a firm order for ten aircraft plus five options in December 2005.

Marco Bologna, TAM's CEO declared: 'With this repeat order we are continuing our long-lasting and privileged relationship with Airbus as its largest customer in the Latin American region. The Airbus products are the right economical choice to respond to our traffic growth and will further sustain our network development as we will continue opening up new routes.'

'We are very honoured with this repeat order and mark of confidence from TAM' said John Leahy, Airbus COO Customers,' and we are proud to see how the Airbus products have continuously contributed to TAM's sustained growth on its domestic and international network, positioning it as Brazil's largest airline.'

The Airbus presence in Latin America has steadily grown over the past ten years to reach 66 per cent of al new sales in the region today and with a total of 236 aircraft in operation with 12 airlines.

The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is the world's best-selling single-aisle aircraft family, with around 50 million flight hours to date, more than 4700 aircraft ordered and 2,900 delivered to some 180 operators worldwide. Designed to optimise revenue through cabin adaptability and passenger comfort and featuring the most modern and complete fly-by-wire technology available on any single-aisle aircraft, the A320 Family ensures savings in every element of direct operating cost and provides operators with the highest degree of operational commonality and economy for aircraft in the 100-220 seat category.

The A330 is the longest-range twin-engine Airbus aircraft in-service. It has flown over five million operational hours with 60 customers and operators, a fact that underlines its strong market endorsement. Comfortably carrying 253 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement the A330-200 entered into service in 1998. Derived from the longer fuselage A330-300, it features higher payloads and improved engines. Its range of up to 12,500 km/6,750 nm enables it to easily serve non-stop destinations, such as e.g. for TAM from Sao Paulo to Paris, London or New York.

Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS company.
