National Aerospace Laboratory NLR
: 12 November, 2007  (Company News)
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the NLR facilities in Flevoland. In celebration, NLR organized a helicopter show and symposium on October 18, under the banner '50 Years of Helicopter Testing in the Noordoostpolder'
Fifty years ago, the first stone was laid for a second facility of what was then the National Aviation Laboratory (NLL). One of the first activities carried out in the Noordoostpolder was the testing of the Kolibrie helicopter. In the 50 years thereafter, NLR conducted tests with all sorts of helicopters, from the WASP to the NH-90.

Over the decades, the facilities were extended to include wind tunnels, in partnership with our Germany counterpart DLR. The wind tunnels were used to test the aerodynamic characteristics of a wide range of aircraft models, including all Airbus designs. Last year, NLR opened a large new testing facility, where studies are conducted of new aircraft materials such as Glare and other composites. NLR's space research department is also located at the Flevoland facility, where it conducts extensive research into satellite navigation and earth observation, among other things.

Over the years, NLR developed into one of the most important centers of innovation in Flevoland province, thus contributing substantially to the growth of employment opportunities for highly-qualified personnel in the province. In addition, NLR Flevoland has helped improve the innovative and competitive capabilities of commerce and industry at the regional and national levels.
