FGS SPESSART, a German tanker providing logistics support to multinational forces operating in the Gulf of Aden, spotted a suspicious skiff which appeared to be approaching SPESSART.
NATO - Co-operation with Yemen Coastguard to suppress illegal immigration
NRP CORTE REAL, the Portuguese flagship of SNMG1 and the nearest frigate in the area, was notified and closed to provide support. Upon investigation CORTE REAL determined that the Somalian skiff was involved in illegal immigration with 39 people onboard the small boat including one child and 10 women, one of whom was pregnant.

The ship remained with the skiff and provided water and first aid until a vessel from the Yemenese Coast Guard arrived on scene and took over. Although SNGM1 is deployed by NATO to the area specifically to counter the piracy threat, this event highlights the cooperation which exists, and is necessary, between all nations and organizations to provide maritime safety and security in the region.

Other ships involved are with NATO are:

NRP CŰrte Real (flagship, Portugal)
HMCS Winnipeg (Canada)
HNLMS De Zeven ProvinciŽn (Netherlands)
ESPS Blas de Lezo (Spain)
USS Halyburton (United States of America)
