High-altitude ElectroMagnetic Pulse filters made by MPE provide a more compact solution that meets MIL-STD pulse current injection requirements
MPE Ltd - High-altitude ElectroMagnetic Pulse Filters meet MIL-STD
In recent years the danger of an electromagnetic pulse attack from terrorists and rogue states has increased while the nuclear menace of the former Communist bloc has receded. Accordingly MPE Ltd has developed technically innovative High-altitude ElectroMagnetic Pulse (HEMP) filters to protect against the devastating effects of nuclear and high-powered microwave blasts high in the atmosphere which would otherwise knock out military computer and communications networks as well as civil and commercial infrastructure.

Typically vulnerable military and homeland security locations requiring HEMP protection would be operational headquarters, command posts and mobile tactical shelters as well as a nationís key computer and telecommunications installations and power supply network.

Designed to meet Military Standard (MIL-STD) 188-125 Parts 1 and 2, this exceptionally versatile new range of filters from MPE, with a current rating per line of 6A to 400A at 50 degC, are smaller, lighter, lower in cost and have a better residual current performance than any previous solutions offered by the market.

The design of these High-altitude ElectroMagnetic Pulse (HEMP) filters is unique because MPE has developed them to satisfy the pulse current injection (PCI) requirements of the specification rather than the usual insertion loss specification. Other filter manufacturers generally adapt traditional installation filter designs in an attempt to comply with the stringent PCI requirements, but such a compromise results in unnecessarily large filters with front-end circuitry and some uncertainty as to whether they will meet the complete specification.

Boasting a 40,000 sq ft production facility in Kirkby, Liverpool, MPE Ltd has been designing and manufacturing custom EMC filters for power-related equipment protection applications on fighting vehicles for half a century. Some of these expert solutions cover standard military vehicle equipment such as fans, motors and engine management systems, whilst more specialist defence applications range from beacons, smoke dischargers and door actuators to turret motors, shielded containers and communications or medical equipment.
