COTS filters from MPE aid compliance of military- vehicles with DEF STAN 59-41 and MIL-STD-461
MPE Ltd - EMI/RFI suppression filter solutions
MPE Ltd of Liverpool has been designing and manufacturing EMI/RFI suppression filter solutions for equipment protection applications on fighting vehicles for half a century. Some of these expert COTS filter solutions cover standard military vehicle equipment such as fans, motors and engine management systems, whilst more specialist defence applications range from beacons, smoke dischargers and door actuators to turret motors, shielded containers and communications or medical equipment. Typical standard fans and single- and multi-speed motors requiring EMI/RFI suppression include alternators, motors for windscreen wipers, washers and blowers, oil cooler fans and aircon equipment.

COTS filters from MPE assist equipment to comply with DEF STAN 59-41 and MIL-STD-461. Although solutions vary in current rating (3A to 100A) or the number of lines (standard 2-line or 1-8 multi-line configurations) to suit the precise application, the type of filter circuit configuration will often be very similar. The range includes rugged, self-healing feedthrough capacitors, utilized where mainly high-frequency noise requires suppression.

MPE has identified that most uses call for one of three basic types of filter circuit, as detailed in their technical literature. General features include neat and compact enclosures, integral screened flying leads, and screw and through-bulkhead mounting, whilst performance is rated at 90dB in the frequency range from 150kHz up to more than 1GHz.

Filter solution #1 provides multi-line suppression for single- and multi-speed motors, aircon systems, windscreen washers, etc. Filter solution #2 comprises paired filter lines offering suppression for applications such as single-speed motors, equipment power, blower motors, oil cooler fans, windscreen washers, engine management power and dedicated military ancillary equipment. Filter solution #3 consists of feedthrough capacitors for alternators, generators and uses in high-frequency noise suppression.

Mechanical customisation of these standard filter products is also available from MPE where it is impractical to interface a particular solution because of vehicle constraints confined spaces, an alternative mounting arrangement or termination style, or the connections or shielding requirements.
