Strong position from NATO C3 Exhibition now confirmed in trials
At the annual NATO Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) held in Norway and the UK in June, Luciad technology was widely used in supporting SACT’s (Supreme Allied Commander Transformation) objectives of furthering the interoperability between NATO and national C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence) systems. The exercise confirmed Luciad’s growing presence in mission-critical systems, a fact also demonstrated at the NATO C3 Board Exhibition on Situational Awareness.

High performance C4I visualization at CWID 2008

In Lillehammer-Norway, Luciad’s flagship product LuciadMap featured in several important Command and Control systems. Below is a description of some of the primary systems using LuciadMap.

- SIC 21: LuciadMap was used by Thales to build a new-generation command information system for the French navy enabling any entity (platform, chief of staff) to operate within national or coalition C3I networks, regardless of the force organization or command structure
- Imp@ct: A LuciadMap-based combat information system designed by EADS to support military personnel on the battlefield in the field of tactical situation and command. This on-the-fly cartographic viewer allows visualizing the battlespace in two and three dimensions
- ACCS LOC1: NATO’s Air Command and Control System Level of Capability 1 (ACS LOC1) sets new standards of integration for air operations in Europe, providing a single, integrated approach to planning, tasking, monitoring and mission execution. Next to ACCS LOC1, LuciadMap is also being used in the JCOP and ICC programs.
- TIS: The Turkish Air Force Information System from Havelsan uses LuciadMap as its core mapping capability. LuciadMap components are being used for the storing, extracting, analyzing and modeling of spatial data for the Battle Management (BM), Resource Management (RM) subsystems, and Business Information Warehouse (BIW) systems of TIS.

At the CWID UK site in Portsmouth, the WebS2AT system was demonstrated, using LuciadMap as its core GIS component. This Web-based Secure Situation Awareness Tool has been developed by Thales UK for dynamically and interactively visualizing the battlespace in order to obtain an enhanced Common Operational Picture. Demonstrating its flexibility towards SOA use, the Luciad WMS solution was used by this and other systems to serve real-time track data layers.

“These numerous successful interoperability trials and scenario play confirmed LuciadMap as the high performance visualization solution of choice for building modern and flexible C4I systems that support multi-national coalition forces in diverse operational environments”, says Mr. Lode Missiaen, the Luciad CEO.

Situational Awareness at NATO C3 Board Exhibition

The position of LuciadMap as the visualization solution for GIS centric C2 applications for Military end user systems worldwide also became apparent at the NC3B Exhibition for Situational Awareness through a Common Operational Picture. At the event held in Brussels 21-22 May, Luciad technology was running in key programs of no less than six of the exhibiting organizations.

“It is great to see our software perfectly matches the Exhibition’s purpose to show an integrated capability to create a common operational picture including planning, theatre-generated overlays and multiple projections of units, assets and reference points,” concludes Mr. Missiaen.
