Industry Trophy for BMT in powerboat challenge

BMT Defence Services recently celebrated first place at this year’s Industry Powerboat Challenge organised by QinetiQ.  A team of eight young engineers from the Bath-based engineering consultancy demonstrated their engineering prowess and claimed the top spot with their ‘Flipper 2’ design.

The event which took place at QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin facility in Haslar, near Gosport saw 16 different teams from the maritime industry come together to test their marine design, integration and project planning skills against one another and build a radio controlled model powerboat.

Taking part in the event, Thomas Kerslake, Technical Apprentice at BMT Defence Services explains: “This event provided us with a great networking opportunity.  Not only did we have the chance to work closely as a team, but we were able to demonstrate our ability to solve technical challenges and create a winning design – the trophy has taken pride of place in the office.”

Roy Quilliam, Technical Director at BMT Defence Services comments: “At a time when the pool of talent is finite, we need to do everything we can to engage and encourage young people to consider maritime engineering as an exciting career option.  Investing in design and engineering and attracting young people into an industry which is positive about the future will certainly help to drive growth and ensure that the UK continues to be seen as the centre for engineering excellence.”
