DVD - Defence Equipment And Support (DE&S)
: 16 May, 2008  (New Product)
Team of contractors help improve levels of protection and comfort for troops
General Support Vehicles Integrated Project Team (GSV IPT) has established a CONDO (Contractors Deployed on Operations) agreement with KBR to fit a range of urgent operational requirement (UOR) upgrades to heavy vehicles operating in Afghanistan. This is the first time the IPT has employed contractors in theatre and the upgrades will ensure troops continue to receive the highest levels of protection and comfort.

Members of GSV IPT responsible for delivering the in-theatre upgrades will be at DVD in June alongside seven other IPTs and Groups who will be using the event as their annual stakeholder day.

“The fitment of UOR upgrades to Heavy B vehicles deployed on operations remains one of the highest priorities within GSV IPT,” explains Ian Haskell, project manager, GSV IPT. “The preferred option is always to bring equipment up to the accepted theatre entry standard before deployment. However, with the increased number of UORs being fitted, military manpower within operational theatres do not always have the time to fit them. This solution has been extremely successful and ensures troops continue to receive the highest levels of protection and comfort.”

DVD is one of the most important events in the defence equipment calendar. It provides a unique opportunity for the defence community to meet, discuss, learn about and experience the equipment and support that is critical to the success of the UK’s Armed Forces. This year, DVD will be bigger and better with eight IPTs and Groups, including GSV IPT, participating. GSV IPT is a through life IPT responsible for the procurement and in-service management of heavy logistics vehicles with a payload of four tonnes and above.

The KBR CONDO team are currently fitting additional Armour from Permali and air conditioning units manufactured by DML to the Oshkosh Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET). Additionally, they have done some work on the Oshkosh Wheeled Tanker and the Foden Recovery Vehicle. Plans are now being put into place to transfer this capability to Operation TELIC later in the year. As well as ensuring all vehicles are brought up to the same standard, making subsequent UOR fitment easier, the new arrangement frees up front line troops and reduces the time taken for installation.
