Fort Jackson contract for DefenCell

J & S Franklin Ltd
: 19 August, 2009  (Company News)
Following the recent contract for the US Army range at Fort Jackson, J & S Franklin will
once again be demonstrating DefenCell, a multi-purpose force protection system at this years' Defence Systems & Equipment International (DSEi09) which will be held at Excel London from the 8th to the 11th September 2009.
DefenCell was supplied for the construction of a Protective Berm at the Urban Assault
Range at Fort Jackson, Columbia, USA. The Berm consisted of two walls 14ft high and 150 ft and 120ft long respectively, each using 8 layers of DefenCell. The purpose of the wall was to increase the protected area and prevent ricochet and stray rounds leaving the range complex.

DefenCell walls were selected as offering the advantages of decreasing the footprint of
the berm and amount of aggregate used in construction as well as providing an alternative to the costly and maintenance intensive traditional earth bunds.

DefenCell's cellular design, along with the latest geotextile construction technology
provides strength, versatility and simplicity. Significant advances in UV resistance have
been tested to show extended durability in extreme conditions.

DefenCell is air-droppable, man portable and its non-metallic structure means it
generates no secondary shrapnel and can be safely pushed off the back of a lorry with no risk of damage.

DefenCell is currently on operational deployment in Afghanistan with the British Army,
where it is protecting two highly vulnerable Ammunition supply points in two separate
locations at Camp Bastion in Helmand province and Kandahar Airport, in Chad with the
Irish Defence Force, and a number of US bases. It is deployed in facilities and force
protection roles in the UK and Italy where it continues to meet the exacting requirements
of operational troop and equipment protection in hostile environments.
