Thales Alenia Space has commissioned COM DEV to supply ferrite based switching systems for an international satellite for monitoring ocean winds and waves
COM DEV Europe has announced the signing of a contract valued in excess of 3 million Euro, with Thales Alenia Space of France to provide ferrite-based switching payload equipment on CFOSAT, a joint French / Chinese ocean wind and wave monitoring satellite. COM DEV will supply a Ku-band duplexer and Ku-band switch matrix for the wave-scatterometer spectrometer (SWIM) instrument, which will measure wave activity on the ocean surface.

'We are delighted to continue our strong relationship with Thales Alenia Space in the signing of this contract,' said Rob Spurrett, Managing Director of COM DEV Europe. 'We are seeing an increased worldwide demand for a European-sourced alternative for this type of ferrite switch equipment. This demand is presenting us with significant new opportunities.'

Ferrite switches allow the rapid switching of microwave power with no moving parts for applications where very fast switching at high repetition frequencies is needed. COM DEV Europe Limited has a long and successful history of supplying ferrite switch equipment to Thales Alenia Space and other primes for Earth observation and telecommunications applications. Regarding a recent successful mission on which COM DEV ferrite switch equipment was used, Mr Spurrett declared: 'The stunning results obtained by the SIRAL instrument on the Cryosat mission demonstrate the high performance that we are achieving with these complex units.'
