Oldbury UK is attending the DSEI event to demonstrate its capabilities in bespoke engineering systems for military vehicles
Bespoke military trailers designed and built in Britain

Oldbury UK is participating in DSEi 2013 as part of the NDI Village (South Hall, Stand S5-340).  Examples of its engineered systems for Prime-led programmes are displayed elsewhere at the show.  In recent months, the company has made further step changes in both its programme and production capability.  The Group has also successfully broadened its reach into target export and emerging markets and is actively building a network of strategic partnerships and agencies.

Oldbury UK is a specialist platform provider and integrator, with a core focus on vehicle engineering and containerised, trailerised, bespoke, special purpose and UOR solutions.  In response to demand, it has geared up for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) programmes for equipment returning from current and previous deployment in theatre.

Its design and development engineering resources are co-located with its fully equipped fabrication, shot-blasting, assembly, erecting shops and finishing facilities and are ideally suited for repair, mid-life refurbishment , upgrade and re-engineering requirements – an area in which the company has an established track record from industries such as waste, recycling, quarrying, mining and extraction.

Skan Group’s Wolverhampton headquarters facility also incorporates Boughton Engineering, which was acquired by Skan Group two years ago and has its own portfolio of defence products.  This includes the current in-service AVRE trailer, currently being upgraded at Wolverhampton for operation with Terrier and other prime movers.  Boughton can also offer Demountable Rack Offload and Pickup Systems (DROPS) with lift capabilities from 3 - 30 tonnes.

Concurrently, the Group has extended its hitherto best known mobile platform and trailer business into provision of new build, fully bespoke, integrated and containerised solutions, to meet portable battlefield infrastructure requirements and urgent operational requirements (UORs) for specialist equipment.

Group Managing Director, Richard Skan says, “Oldbury and Boughton bring together an unique mix of design engineering and production capability, which is both responsive and highly adaptable.  With combined track records which add up to over 250 years of British quality engineering excellence, the Group has an embedded culture firmly based on innovation, thinking outside the box and a practical approach to problem solving.  Over time, the companies have been responsible for a range of defence and civilian applications and solutions which are today established standard practice.

“Our range of capability is expanding all the time – and it is versatile and flexible.  Also over time, we have recognised the importance and benefits of our involvement as early as possible in the requirements capture process – where we can add value and then tailor the design and system componentry to precisely integrate with the platform.  This approach has been proved already in real life practical delivery terms – where we have shortened important UOR lead times and deployment into theatre by months.  It is this, as much as any other factors, that has led, largely at the behest of our end-user, Prime, Tier1 and Tier2 customers, to our natural growth into full programme management and project integration”, says Richard Skan.

The co-located Oldbury UK and Boughton Engineering headquarters plant in Wolverhampton covers a 2.5-acre site, of which 30,000 sq. ft. is enclosed and includes overhead craneage; extensive fabrication, erecting and fitting bays; a dedicated axle shop and advanced CAD and design engineering capabilities.  The company is fully accredited to TUV ISO 9001.  The plant also incorporates a number of work areas which can be isolated and entry controlled for security sensitive projects.  In addition, the Group has just opened a new satellite fabrication plant in North Devon.

Oldbury UK’s established range of equipment now includes generator sets, air conditioning packages, sand filters, solar shields and enclosures, as well as standard, bespoke, specialist and multi-role (MR) trailers and integrated mobile platforms.
