ATA - Delta and Northwest to merge

Air Transport Association Of America (ATA)
: 18 April, 2008  (Company News)
Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines on Monday announced plans to merge. The transaction would create the world's largest airline measured by traffic, and some industry experts believe it could also prompt other carriers to combine.
The agreement remains subject to regulatory approval, and some observers say the carriers might face objections from their unions. Northwest Airlines CEO Doug Steenland said there are plans to continue contract negotiations to resolve issues of seniority and compensation. Of the merger agreement, Delta CEO Richard Anderson said, 'Our need to respond to the pressures of dramatically rising fuel costs and a softening U.S. economy drove us to take a closer look at all options to strengthen our future.'
