Cabling the warships of the future
Supply of cabling for the second major phase of the new Type 45 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyer programme for the Royal Navy has been started by AEI Cables.The company is providing the full range of power and control and instrumentation cables to prime contractor BAE Systems for the next four warships in the programme. Scheduled for completion in 2008, the four ships will add to the two already completed. Cables for these complex, high performance systems include specialist designs to withstand extreme temperatures and environments and meet stringent Royal Navy engineering standards and specifications. Derek Mansfield, managing director of AEI Cables, said: 'We are proud of our work with our partners such as BAE Systems and prestige projects such as this demonstrate our capability to deliver the best.' AEI Cables recently won the BAE Systems chairman's award for innovation on the Type 45 project which was presented to technical director Peter Worrall, the second time the company has won the award. The Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyer is a major addition for the Royal Navy's capability to respond flexibly to challenges in the years ahead. In concert with the Future Aircraft Carrier, it will provide the backbone of the Royal Navy's air defences for much of the first half of this century. The first of class was assembled and launched at Scotstoun on the Clyde. The remaining ships will be assembled and launched at Govan and the yards will continue to build the same sections throughout the programme to increase efficiency. |
