AUVSI to convene Public Safety Officials for panel on Barriers to Using Unmanned Systems in Public Safety Applications
The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) has announced the lineup of speakers for its landmark panel discussion “Expanding into New Markets: Understanding Barriers to Using Unmanned Systems in Public Safety Applications” on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. as part of AUVSI’s Unmanned Systems North America 2008. Police, fire, search & rescue and other civil authorities will meet with unmanned systems industry leaders to begin defining issues and policy barriers that are currently prohibiting the use of unmanned systems for public safety nationwide.
Panel participants include Captain Charles Campe of the San Diego Sherriff’s Department; Officer Kevin Means of the San Diego Police Department Air Support Unit; Captain James Di Giovanna, Education Program Manager for the Airborne Law Enforcement Association; and Chief Brian Fennessy, Deputy Fire Chief for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
“We are very pleased to have these members of the law enforcement community participating in this important panel,” said AUVSI Executive Vice President and panel moderator John Lambert. “This is a significant step toward making unmanned systems a life-saving partner for our first responders.”
The issues identified during this program will form the basis for AUVSI’s strategic thrust to shape policy, facilitate certifications and transition unmanned systems technology into the civil and commercial sectors. Panelists will outline the potential uses for unmanned systems in their line of work and they will discuss the policy restrictions they face in making the use of unmanned systems a reality.
