Secure Communications for Nordic Defense

Sectra (published 13/05/2008)

To secure the Nordic Battlegroup's voice communications, the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV) has ordered crypto products from Sectra that protect telecommunication and tactical radio communication.

Nordic Battlegroup is one of EU's rapid reaction forces, which encompasses units from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia and Ireland. Nordic Battlegroup consists of a total of approximately 2,800 soldiers to be deployed for crisis management operations within a radius of 6,000 kilometers from Brussels. Beginning on January 1, 2008, and for six months from that date, Sweden will command this rapid reaction force.
Sectra has developed a communications solution in which the Tiger XS voice encryptor can be used for IP-based communications over satellite links. Tiger users within the Nordic Battlegroup can opt to make secure calls over satellite or over national landline and GSM networks. Telecommunications is secured at stationary and mobile command centers and at mobile users and the military command.
The Nordic Battlegroup uses Sectra's tactical encryptor to secure radio communication. The crypto can be mounted in vehicles and carried by troops, for instance on reconnaissance missions. Radio communications between command centers, vehicles and troops is encrypted and increases security for the battlegroup in the conflict areas.
